Los Suns Make People Care About NBA Again

Before Game 2 of their series against the San Antonio Spurs, the Phoenix Suns made the decision to wear their alternate "Los Suns" jerseys.

The feat accomplished two things:

1. It was the franchise's way of publicly stating that they are against the new immigration law that was passed in the state of Arizona.  The entire team felt strongly that the law was unfair.  The organization cited that it would be less likely Canadian Steve Nash be asked to provide identification versus Brazilian Leandro Barbosa.

2. "Los Suns" made people care about the NBA again!

Honestly, how many people have actually paid attention to the NBA Playoffs this season?

Does anybody even know who "Los Suns" played and defeated in the first round?

Its unfortunate that the league is known very little for the actual action and competition on the court, but instead about the constant coverage and attention mega-superstars such as Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, and Dwayne Wade always receive.

Were you aware that the Charlotte Bobcats made the playoffs for the first time in their existence?  I know you are aware of the rumors on where King James may play next season.

Yes, ESPN and ABC have done a great job showing the games throughout the playoffs on television, but nobody is watching.  Game 2 of "Los Suns" vs "Los Spurs" only drew 4.1 million viewers, a feable number even after the controversy caused by the political statement made by the Phoenix "Los Suns" organization.

But atleast people are talking.  And if they keep talking, and if "Los Suns" keep winning, then maybe people will tune in.

The NBA could help.  They could start marketing the success of their teams, rather than the leading scorers.  And they could shorten the playoffs.  Giving teams 3 days off between games is ridiculous, especially with how many times teams play on back-to-back nights in the regular season.  If a series is played every other night, maybe some casual fans will be able to hold interest.  Maybe the series will grow more of an attitude and personality and make for a better played and more entertaining brand of basketball.

As a loyal follower of all basketball at both the professional and college level, I hope people are aware of how great NBA Playoff Basketball really is.  Let's hope "Los Suns" have drawn some more interest to the NBA game of basketball.
