Cain took a no-hitter into the 8th inning in a crucial match-up against the Colorado Rockies, but his bid to make history was broken up on an infield single by Rockies pinch-hitter Jay Payton.
No big deal for Cain, as he held on for the complete game victory, striking out 8, and helping to push the Giants into the division lead with a 4-2 victory over the Rockies Sunday at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado.
With his second impressive performance in the past week, Cain has earned himself ManSpeak Pitcher of the Week honors.
Not only did Cain dazzle with his near no-hit bid in Colorado, but he was also spectacular in a 6 inning, 2 hit performance earlier in the week, good for a 1-0 win against the lowly Chicago Cubs.
While Cain has been money down the stretch for the Giants as they try to claw their way into the playoffs, he acknowledged that throwing a no-hitter would've been special.
"This was probably the best opportunity to do it with a reasonable pitch count. I felt like I had good enough stuff and felt like I had enough oomph at the end to be able to throw down in the zone and still be able to throw my pitches the way I wanted to."
Cain, who has been a shadow in the spotlight of Tim Lincecum's hair, has managed to put together a fine season (13-10, 2.95 ERA, 173 K's) for the Giants and has become a lethal sidekick for Lincecum. The duo makes the Giants scary to face in a 5 game, first round divisional playoff series.
Hopefully the Giants make the playoffs so the rest of the world will get a chance to see just how good Matt Cain really is.
