Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn has Cancer

Tony Gwynn recently revealed that he has
been diagnosed with cancer.
Tony Gwynn recently revealed that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

Let this be a lesson to everyone. Even if you are an amazing athlete and one of the best hitters of all time, tobacco, in one form or another, will still give you cancer.

The 15 time all-star and first ballot Hall of Famer was told last week by doctors that he had cancer in the parotid, which is the largest salivary gland used for chewing and swallowing.

"They say this is a slow-moving but aggressive form of cancer," Gwynn told the Union-Tribune. "I'm going to be aggressive and not slow-moving in treating this."
That would be a first for Tony Gwynn, moving quickly.

Gwynn has had a number of health issues in his career, including weight problems stemming from his playing days, and more recently, lower back issues.

Gwynn had a career .338 batting average,
good for 19th in MLB history.

Gwynn obviously is one of the best hitters of the past 30 years and is likely the most popular San Diego Padre of all time.  Gwynn finished his career with a .338 lifetime batting average, good for 19th in MLB history.  Gwynn also had 3,141 hits, which is the 18th most in history.

But, how much better could he of been if he took better care of himself?

Its obvious Tony never met a weight room or a treadmill, but he sure knew where to find Twinkies, thick crust pizza, and ice cream.

And evidently, his physical appearance wasn't the only thing the Hall of Famer did not care about.

After having 3 procedures on his lymph nodes since 1997, Gwynn failed to give up his habit of chewing tobacco, even after his playing career.

"I haven't discussed that with the doctors yet, but I'm thinking it's related to dipping," said Gwynn.

Gwynn, currently the head baseball coach at San Diego State University, hopefully will recover fully and we wish him the best.

Hopefully, the players at San Diego State not only learn a little bit about hitting from Tony Gwynn, but from some of the health mistakes of their manager as well.
