The Orlando Magic have decided that their big man, Dwight Howard, is a priority. They don't want to hear of him escaping while watching a one hour special on ESPN after he becomes a free agent during the summer of 2012. Magic general manager Otis Smith announced his intentions to offer Howard a contract extension next summer, one year prior to him becoming a free agent.
"We want Dwight to be in a Magic uniform for as long as he plays basketball. That's in the best interest of our franchise and, we hope, it is in the best interest of Dwight."
Funny how Smith wants to offer Howard an extension next summer? Why not do it right now? Why wait? Why should Howard be excited about a possible long term committment that won't happen for another year? What about the next season, where Howard will be sure to take a beating manning the middle of the paint for the Orlando Magic.
Hopefully Smith doesn't wait too long, otherwise in 2012 we'll have to watch Stuart Scott and Michael Wilbon for another "Decision".
Nets out of Melo Sweepstakes
According to reports out of New Jersey, the Nets have pulled themselves out of a possible 4 way trade that would make Carmelo Anthony a New Jersey Net.
Although the Nets have pulled their offer for now, that doesn't mean the Nets are out of the Carmelo bidding.
The Nets, who were reportedly prepared to ship out forward Derek Favors, this years first round draft pick out of Georgia Tech, to Denver and starting point guard Devin Harris to Charlotte, are planning to move ahead for now as they regroup with the players they have as they prepare for the season.
Head coach Avery Johnson says that the trade rumors have not been a distraction for Favors or for any of the guys in the locker room.
"I know that I love our guys, love the guys who are here. We're not a distracted team at all. Favors has been one of our best players so far. He's doing a nice job."
Why in the world does New Jersey want to trade away what was becoming a very solid, young core of players. With Favors, Harris, and center Brook Lopez, the Nets have been building a team that looks to improve on a pathetic performance last season?
Why trade for Anthony now? Why not wait and sign him next summer? The Nets will have plenty of space under the cap room to offer Anthony a man contract and will have Favors, Harris, and Lopez as great pieces around him to compete immediately next year.
Love's knee swollen
Kevin Love played great this summer for Team U.S.A, helping lead the path to a gold medal in the World Championships in Turkey.
But Love came home banged up. An MRI, to the relief of the Minnesota Timberwolves, revealed just inflammation and zero structural damage.
Its good to hear that Love will be fine with a little rest, but will it really matter for the Wolves? I don't see how this team wins 15 games.
