Despite being well out of the playoff picture, the Detroit Tigers fans have another goal in mind for first baseman Miguel Cabrera. After belting his 38th homer of the season Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, chants ran
AL MVP!
After belting his 38th homer of the season Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, chants rang from the Detroit fans throughout Comerica Park, "M-V-P! M-V-P!"
Cabrera is doing everything in his power to help his cause. In the past week, during a span of 6 games, Cabrera hit .391, going 9 for 23 with 4 home runs and 8 RBI's, which was good enough to be named this week's ManSpeak MLB Player of the Week.
Even before this past week of bashing the ball all over the yard, Cabrera's MVP candidacy was strong, despite the Detroit Tigers having a miserable second half riddled with injuries.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland is on the same bandwagon as Tigers fans, although he is against a full fledged campaign.
"I don't want to get into the politics of it. But if he's not the MVP, I'd be surprised. There are some teams who've won that have candidates, but to me he should get it."
Which really makes Cabrera's numbers all the better since he has little to no protection and has truly been the only legit threat in a line-up that really has been testing the youth of the organization since mid August.
Cabrera has managed to do well in 3 triple crown categories, slugging 38 home runs (2nd in AL), 126 RBI's (1st in AL), scored 111 runs (1st in AL) all while hitting .328 (3rd in AL). Impressive indeed.
What's even more impressive has been Cabrera's patience at the plate. Cabrera has taken 88 walks this season, topping his previous career high of 86 back in 2006 when he was with the Florida Marlins.
Cabrera has become the American League version of Albert Pujols and the last time I checked, Albert has 3 MVP trophies.
Time for Cabrera to collect the AL version of the award.
