Bradford Gets First Win

Sam Bradford is only 3 games into his young NFL career, but he is playing like a wily veteran.

Bradford led his St. Louis Rams (1-2) to their first victory of the season, trouncing the Washington Redskins 30-16 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.

With star running back Stephen Jackson out of the game early in the second quarter with a groin injury, it was up to Bradford to lead the Rams as the main offensive weapon, and Bradford did not disappoint.

Bradford was 23 of 37 passing, good for 235 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception while hitting 9 different receivers for completions.  While the numbers are modest and average, it was the poise and leadership the youngster showed throughout the second half of the game when the Rams outscored the Redskins 16-3.

Bradford demonstrated that in his youth, he could manage a game, helping the Rams keep possession for over 34 minutes and converting 7 of 16 opportunities on 3rd down

But Bradford, the 1st overall pick in this year's NFL draft, was paid big money to make the big throws, which he did on a a 25 yard completion to wide receiver Mark Clayton on a 3rd down roll-out pass in the 4th quarter with 2:52 left on the clock.  Game over.

Bradford was key in this first victory for the Rams, but he had help.

Back-up running back Kenneth Darby stepped in for an injured Stephen Jackson (groin) to carry the ball 14 times for 49 yards, including a 12 yard touchdown run mid-way through the 3rd quarter.

Tight-end Daniel Fells was also huge, snagging 3 balls for 22 yards, including a touchdown catch from Bradford in the first quarter.

And the Ram defense was stout against the Donovan McNabb led Redskin offense.  Despite allowing 116 yards on the ground, the St. Louis defense was able to hold the Redskins to 1 of 10 on 3rd down.  Cornerback Bradley Fletcher also had a key interception of McNabb in the fourth quarter, which helped seal the game.

While, the Rams have a long way to go, Bradford said it felt good to celebrate a victory at home at the Edward Jones Dome.

"We've put in a lot of hard work for this.  To get to celebrate with those guys, it was a great feeling."

The Rams will hope to celebrate again next week as they take on division rival Seattle.  Meanwhile, it doesn't get any easier for the (1-2) Redskins, as Donovan McNabb travels back to (2-1) Philadelphia to take on the Eagles, a game that will be sure to get plenty of publicity.
