Isaac Bruce, long-time pro-bowler and Super Bowl champion with the St. Louis Rams, will make a return trip back to his old stomping grounds.
The organization, in the midst of a complicated and unresolved ownership change, purchased the contract of the future Hall of Famer from the San Francisco 49ers in order for Bruce to officially retire with the organization he will forever be associated with.
Bruce will retire Wednesday at a press conference and will finish his NFL career ranked second in receiving yards (15,208), fifth in receptions (1,024) and ninth in touchdowns (91
What a gesture by both of these organizations. First off by the 49ers, who had his rights and could've used his veteran presence on the field this season to help guide the ultra-talented, but inexperienced 2nd year receiver out of Texas Tech, Michael Crabtree.
But, how about the Rams? Yes, we are aware that this is possibly the worst organization in football right now. The team has won 3 games in the past 2 seasons combined, the sale of the team is being disputed and challenged by 40% owner Stan Kroenke, and the prospects for the upcoming season are bleak at best with little talent at wideout to support number one overall pick Sam Bradford.
But this move by the Rams is brilliant. Creating a positive buzz in St. Louis can begin a rallying of the fans. And a little rally may all that Sam Bradford and pro-bowl running back Stephen Jackson may need to finally start getting this team over the hump.
Isaac Bruce deserved this move. He deserved to have the chance to retire a Ram. The city of St. Louis deserves it too.
The Rams have nothing to lose because they lose all the time. But today, the organization deserves to be congratulated as this was an easy victory.
