NHL Hockey Training Camps are Here!

It always amazes me what happens with our friends over at ESPN during this time of year.

All of the buzz surrounds football, whether it is at the professional level in the NFL, the college level, and yes, even High School Football gets plenty of coverage.

But, without much coverage and seemingly once again sliding through the cracks, hockey training camps across North America will begin in the next 7 to 10 days for many organizations.

There are plenty of story lines worth mentioning.  Will Sid the Kid help lead the Penguins back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs?  Can the Blackhawks repeat after losing so many players?  How will Ilya Kovalchuk perform after receiving so much scrutiny about his outrageous contract?

Answers to these questions will come at some point, but
since you aren't getting the coverage from the most relied upon sports network (they are too busy talking about an award that was won 5 years ago.  I admit, I wrote about it too!), here are some of the top stories in NHL hockey today!

Joel Quenneville Receives Extension in Chicago

Joel Quenneville, one time coach of the St. Louis Blues and Colorado Avalanche, and recent winner of the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks, received a 3 year extension from the organization.  Details of the contract were not disclosed, but Quenneville seems mighty happy to be locked in the "Windy City" for the next 3 seasons.

"This is an exciting day for my family and I.  Chicago is a place we are proud to call home and the Blackhawks organization is one we feel fortunate to be a part of.  Winning the Stanley Cup was a special season for all of us involved, and I am looking forward to more opportunities in the years to come."

The Blackhawks will have a tough road of defending their Stanley Cup.

Jordan Staal is Out 6 to 8 Weeks

Evidently Peter Forsberg is not the only player to have foot problems.  Staal, who injured his foot last year in the playoffs, will miss the next 6 to 8 weeks and likely the first week of the regular season after having surgery performed on his infected foot.

The 22 year old Penguin forward was a finalist for the Selke Trophy, which goes to the top defensive forward in the league last season.  After 4 season, Staal had looked to improve on a season where he netted 21 goals and 49 points while playing stellar defense for the offensive minded Penguins.

The longer he is out, the tougher things will be on Sid the Kid and Gino Malkin.

All-Star Game Coming to Capital

No, the Washington Capitals will not be hosting the 2012 All-Star game.  Instead, it was the Ottawa Senators who were awarded with the opportunity to host the prolific and exciting game.  This will mark the 1st time the city of Ottawa, the capital of Canada, will host the All-Star game and festivities.  Montreal hosted the game in 2009.

Hey, there is not much news, but at least it is something to get your blood flowing and ready for the 2010-2011 NHL Hockey season.  Good luck to all of the teams, especially the St. Louis Blues, as training camps begin.

I still wish hockey got the pre-season coverage football did, but then I would remember I'd be living a pipe-dream.
