Top 10 Smartest Athletes

I generally write about sports and what is going on in the world of MLB Baseball, NFL Football, and NBA Basketball.  Rarely do I mention how smart an athlete is or any other human being.  In fact, I'm generally referring to how dumb people are (see my Braylon Edwards article) and critique on field decisions and bone headed plays.

But recently the sportingnews.com listed the 20 smartest athletes in sports today.  Quite a unique   spin on sports as opposed to bashing Carmelo Anthony for wanting to go to New Jersey, Joe Torre for talking about the Mets manager position, or anything having to do with the New York Jets and the circus Rex Ryan is running in that locker room.

I give the sportingnews.com all the credit for this list, as it was completely compiled by them.  I'd just like to recap the Top 10 for you, in order of smartness of course.

1. Craig Breslow, RP, Oakland A's

A smart relief pitcher?  Isn't that an oxymoron?
Well, evidently Mr. Breslow is just that.  Breslow went to Yale, majored in molecular biophysics, and got a 1420 on SAT.  He speaks both English and Spanish and would be in Med School at NYU if he didn't throw 93 MPH.   Certainly impressive.

What would be even more impressive if I knew who he was!

2. Myron Rolle, S, Tennessee Titans

We all know the story of Myron Rolle, winner of the Rhodes Scholar award winner who attended Oxford University to receive a Master's degree in Medical Anthropology rather than going straight to the NFL.

What is Medical Anthropology anyway?

Rolle, now an integral part of the Titan defense, hopefully will help my future kids with their math homework someday.

3. Ross Ohlendorf, SP, Pittsburgh Pirates

If Ohlendorf, is so smart, maybe he can figure out a way to make the Pirates good.  I don't think Einstein could even help the Pirates get out of the annual cellar of the NL Central.

4. George Parros, F, Anaheim Ducks

Have you George Parros fight?  Have you seen his mustache?

If you have seen this goon play in an NHL game live in person, you'd never expect him to have an ounce of wit on his massive frame.  His greatest on ice accomplishment, besides winning a Stanley Cup, are his 694 career penalty minutes.

But, you would be quite mistaken if you thought he was a dumb jock, as Parros is a graduate of Princeton where he had a 3.18 GPA while majoring in Economics.

Maybe he could lend Ben Bernanke a hand after he gets done punching out the rest of the goons in the NHL. If you combined Parros's mustache with Bernanke's beard, you would a wicked cool amount of facial hair.

5. Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, Buffalo Bills

This former Harvard grad is having a great week.  Not only has Fitzpatrick been named the 5th smartest athlete, but he also was named the Bills starting QB this week.

Not too shabby for a guy with 1580 SAT score.  But shouldn't he be building the next Black-Scholes model?

6. Matt Birk, C, Baltimore Ravens

Do offensive lineman really have brains?  Evidently Birk is an anomaly ass he also received an economics degree from Harvard.  Maybe he could be Bernanke's body guard if Parros decides against it?

7. Shane Battier F, Houston Rockets

Yes, he went to Duke.  Yes, he did Corey Maggette's homework for him.  Yes, he is one of the best defensive players in the NBA.

But I always thought the best thing about Shane Battier were the wrinkles in his head?

8. Chris Young, SP, San Diego Padres

Its funny that Young is reading The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, because he is TALL.  6 foot 10 inches tall to be exact.  He is also wicked smart, getting a 1300 on his SAT and receiving a degree in Politics from Princeton.

At this point, Young is trying to weasel his Padres into the MLB Playoffs.  Lets see if his performance to close the season is as good as he thesis on The Impact of Jackie Robinson and the Integration of Baseball on Racial Stereotypes in America: A Quantitative Content Analysis of Stories about Race in The New York Times

9. Brad Ausmus, C, Los Angeles Dodgers

I don't know how Ausmus is on this list.  He's barely an athlete any longer.  Ausmus is hitting only .203 this season with just two RBI's

10. Grant Hill, G, Phoenix Suns

One of my all-time favorite basketball players.  I didn't even know he was smart!  Glad to hear it and wish him well throughout the rest of his career.

What a list of brains and muscles.  Entertaining stuff from the sportingnews.com.  Again, this is their list, I just like to comment on it, and unlike these guys, expose my lack of brains.
